Panthers finish sixth at Wadena meet

Both Park Rapids cross-country teams placed sixth at Tuesday's Wadena-Deer Creek Johanna Olson Invitational at Whitetail Run Golf Course at Wadena.

Seth Breitweser finished 23rd overall in 19:39 and Keegan Moses followed by placing 24th in 19:40 as the Park Rapids boys finished sixth with 184 points. Will Pickar (31st in 20:24), Sam Warne (48th in 21:23) and Gabe Bagstad (58th in 22:14) rounded out the Panthers' team score. Kyron Wohlenhaus (64th in 22:52) and Owen Wagner (77th in 25:22) completed Park Rapids' varsity squad.

Little Falls topped the 15-team field with 41 points. Emmet Anderson of Staples-Motley led the field with a winning time of 16:56 over the 5,000-meter course.

Michael Gunn finished 25th in 19:45 as Nevis' only varsity runner.

In the girls race, Whitney Steffel finished 16th overall in 23:24 as Park Rapids tied Wadena-Deer Creek for sixth place with 164 points. Holly Johnson (22nd in 23:35), Haley Pickar (30th in 24:28), Alex Kirlin (45th in 25:51) and Julia Harmon (51st in 26:32) rounded out the Panthers' team score.

Staples-Motley's Kira Sweeney clocked a winning time of 21:02 over the 5K course while Pelican Rapids claimed the team title with 59 points. Sweeney was rated No. 6 in the state Class A individual poll while Pelican Rapids was rated No. 13 in this week's state Class A poll.

Lydia Bjorklund (27:59) and Tori Carrier (31:53) ran junior varsity for Nevis.

UNC's Aho rated

In addition to the Pelican Rapids girls, there were other Section 8A runners and teams listed in this week's state Class A poll.

United North Central's Annika Aho dropped to the No. 13 spot this week after being ranked No. 9 in last week's girls poll. Crookston's Katherine Geist was rated No. 11 while Winona Cotter's Grace Ping topped the Class A girls poll. Annandale was rated No. 1 in the team rankings while Perham was rated No. 2. Fairmont, Stewartville and Howard Lake-Waverly rounded out the top 5.

In the state Class A boys poll, Perham remained in the No. 1 spot followed by Mankato Loyola, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop, Minnehaha Academy and Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin. Pequot Lakes' Reid Pierzinski was rated No. 11 and Ada-Borup/Norman County West's Christian Sterton was rated No. 13 individually. Mounds Park Academy's Declan Dahlberg was the top-rated runner among Class A boys.
