Panthers take control in 3-0 win over Tigers
After a competitive first set, the Park Rapids volleyball team took control in the second set in posting a 25-19, 25-4, 25-17 victory at Nevis Thursday night.
The Panthers never trailed in Set 1, but couldn't put Nevis away until closing with a 7-3 run. Kills by Kortne Byer, Rilee Michaelson and Kamree Carlson, an ace serve by Jaiden McCollum, and a block by Michaelson gave Park Rapids an early 13-7 advantage. A kill by Kia Heide and an ace serve by Eleannor Roehl led the Tigers. Two tips by Michaelson and an ace serve by Kaisa Coborn gave the Panthers an 18-14 edge. After Nevis cut the gap to 18-16, two kills by Michaelson, a kill by Carlson, and tips by Kennedy Carlson and Kamree Carlson closed out the set. Ashley Pyburn had a kill and Montana Baker contributed a kill and a block for the Tigers down the stretch.
Michaelson served the Panthers to a 14-0 advantage at the start of Set 2. Michaelson had an ace and was aided by six kills by McCollum and two kills by Coborn. After a kill by Baker ended that run, two kills by McCollum and a kill by Coborn made it 18-1. Coborn served an ace, Kamree Carlson had a kill, and Michaelson had a kill and winning tip to close out that set.
Cora Umthun served three points, Pyburn and Heide combined on a block, and Pyburn pounded down a kill as the Tigers claimed a 5-3 lead in Set 3. A tip by McCollum, a kill by Kamree Carlson and an ace serve by Coborn gave the Panthers a 6-5 edge before a kill by Pyburn tied it at 6-6. Kills by Kamree Carlson, Michaelson and McCollum were offset by a tip by Roehl, a kill by Pyburn, a block by Pyburn and Roehl, and an ace serve by Roehl as the set stayed tied at 12-12. After a kill by McCollum and a block by Kennedy Carlson made it 15-13, McCollum served an ace and six points to push the lead to 21-13. Kamree Carlson had a kill and Michaelson and Kennedy Carlson combined for a block during that run. After a kill by Pyburn, a kill by Kamree Carlson, an ace serve by Kennedy Carlson and a kill by Michaelson closed out the match.
The Panthers pounded down 41 kills with Kamree Carlson and McCollum tallying 12 kills apiece. Michaelson served 16 points while McCollum had four ace serves and 11 points. Kamree Carlson (10), Coborn (8), McCollum (8) and Byer (7) combined for 33 digs while Kennedy Carlson had 33 set assists as Park Rapids improved to 2-0.
Nevis (which opened the season with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-10 win over Menahga on Aug. 29) fell to 1-1.
