Panthers prevail on court, in pool
It was a successful day on the courts and in the pool for the Park Rapids girls tennis, girls swimming and diving, and volleyball teams Thursday.
Park Rapids swept a pair of Mid-State Conference girls tennis matches at Crosby, edging Detroit Lakes 4-3 and blanking Crosby-Ironton 7-0. In the win over Detroit Lakes, Natalie Kinkel, Tori Hilmanowski and Abby Morris posted wins in singles while Kendra Coborn and Gracie Eischens were victorious at No. 2 doubles. Against C-I, Hilmanowski, Olivia Wallace, Chloe Johnson and Meagan Powers rolled in singles play while the Morris-Kinkel, Coborn-Eischens and Jada Renneberg-Rachael Herman duos won in straight sets in doubles. The Panthers improved to 6-5 in dual meets this season.
The Panthers made their home debut in the pool and won the first eight events, including four 1-2-3 finishes, in coasting to a 96-76 win over Warroad/Roseau/Greenbush-Badger-Middle River. Jordan Klemmer won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly, Maija Hovelsrud won the 200 individual medley, Ellie Ulvin took first in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, Katie Eischens was first in diving and Analise Smee led the field in the 500 freestyle to lead the Panthers, who swam exhibition in the final three events. Madi Robbins, Hovelsrud, Ellie Ulvin and Olivia Ulvin also won the 200 medley relay.
The Park Rapids volleyball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 25-19, 25-4, 25-17 victory at Nevis. Rilee Michaelson had two kills to close out Set 1 and served 14 straight points to give the Panthers a 14-0 lead in Set 2. Jaiden McCollum had six kills during that stretch. Nevis jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Set 3 and stayed within 14-13 before McCollum served six points to seal the win.
