Panthers win 3 of 3 dual meets on road, 1 of 3 duals at home

After opening the season with three losses, the Park Rapids girls tennis team rebounded to claim three victories at Sauk Centre on Aug. 24.

The Panthers (who were coming off a 4-3 loss at Fergus Falls) edged Yellow Medicine East 4-3, blanked Parkers Prairie 7-0 and edged Sauk Centre 4-3.

The Panthers swept the three doubles matches and used a 6-3, 7-5 win by Olivia Wallace at No. 2 singles to edge YME. Natalie Kinkel and Abby Morris posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles; Kendra Coborn and Chloe Johnson posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles; and Veronica Gauthier and Meagan Powers posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

In the win over Parkers Prairie, the Panthers won all seven matches in straight sets. Kinkel (6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles), Tori Hilmanowski (6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles), Morris (6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles) and Powers (6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 singles) coasted in singles play. Wallace and Johnson (6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles), Coborn and Gracie Eischens (6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles), and Jada Renneberg and Morgan Koppleman (6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles) combined to drop only six games in the three doubles matches.

Park Rapids capped off the quadrangular meet as Kinkel won a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles for the deciding point against Sauk Centre. Kinkel prevailed 6-3, 0-6, 7-3 while Johnson posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles. Hilmanowski and Morris prevailed 6-2, 7-6 at No. 1 doubles while Coborn and Eischens prevailed 6-3, 7-6 at No. 2 doubles to complete the win.

"We cut it close again," said Park Rapids head coach Brianne Morris. "I changed my lineup and this time we were able to pull it off."

Panthers go 1-2 at home

The Panthers returned home to the Depot Courts and ended another quadrangular meet on a high note by defeating Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.

Park Rapids opened the day with a 5-2 loss to Section 8A rival Crookston and a 6-1 loss to Mid-State Conference rival Pequot Lakes before closing with a 6-1 win over LP-GE.

Against Crookston, three third-set tiebreakers decided the match as the Pirates used a sweep in singles to pull off the win. Wallace and Johnson prevailed in a tiebreaker for a 6-1, 4-6, 10-7 win at No. 1 doubles while Renneberg and Rachael Herman won a second-set tiebreaker in a 6-0, 7-6 victory at No. 3 doubles. Hilmanowski fell 10-5 in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles while Coborn and Eischens won the first set before falling 10-6 in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles.

Pequot Lakes swept the doubles matches and and won three singles matches in straight sets to defeat the Panthers. Kinkel's 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles produced Park Rapids' lone win.

The Panthers rebounded from those two losses with a decisive win against LPGE. This time Park Rapids swept the doubles matches with Wallace and Johnson coasting to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles; Coborn and Eischens posting a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles; and Renneberg and Herman rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles. Hilmanowski (6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles), Morris (6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles) and Powers (6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles) coasted in singles play to complete the win, which lifted Park Rapids' record in dual meets to 4-5.

In Tuesday's other matches, Pequot Lakes defeated Crookston 5-2 and LPGE 6-1 while Crookston blanked LPGE 7-0.
