After opening the season by dropping a pair of dual meets Friday at the Depot Courts, the Park Rapids girls tennis team rebounded to tie for second place at Saturday's Park Rapids Invitational at the Depot Courts and Century School Courts.

Minnewaska Area posted a 5-2 win over the Panthers in Friday's first match of the North/South Challenge before Mound-Westonka posted a 5-0 win over Park Rapids in the second match. The No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles matches against Mound-Westonka weren't completed when it started to rain. Park Rapids' third match against Pine City was rained out. Aitkin, Crookston, Pine City, Roseau and Thief River Falls were the other teams competing Friday.

On Saturday, Minnewaska Area claimed the title at the Park Rapids Invitational with 32 points as the Panthers tied Fergus Falls and Moorhead for runner-up honors with 16 points in this eight-team tournament.

The Panthers (who were looking for their first win of the season at Fergus Falls Tuesday) will play Parkers Prairie, Yellow Medicine East and Sauk Centre in a quadrangular meet at Sauk Centre Thursday.

"I think that the girls played all right for only having two days of practice because of the rain," said Park Rapids head coach Brianne Morris. "Physically they did well. The biggest thing we need to work on right now is being mentally prepared. There is definitely room for improvement, but I'm happy with how they did with such a limited amount of time on the courts."

Panthers open 0-2

Park Rapids opened the season by dropping matches to Minnewaska Area and Mound-Westonka.

In the match against Minnewaska Area, Tori Hilmanowski posted a straight-set win at No. 2 singles while the No. 2 doubles team of Kendra Coborn and Gracie Eischens prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker to account for Park Rapids' two wins.

In Park Rapids' second match, Mound-Westonka swept the four singles matches and the No. 3 doubles match in straight set for the win as rain washed out the top doubles matches.

Because of time restraints, all sets started at 2-2.
