Nevis rallies to sweep Pine River-Backus
Nevis had to rally in both games to sweep a Northland Conference baseball doubleheader from Pine River-Backus Thursday at Nevis.
PR-B held a 3-2 lead in the first game before the Tigers rallied for a 6-4 win. In the second game, Nevis trailed 5-0 and 11-6 before rallying for a 13-11 victory.
In the opener, the Tigers had eight hits and used four PR-B errors to score twice in the first and four times in the fourth.
Andrew Dudley went 2 for 4 with a run and two RBI and Adam Thompson went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Jack DeWulf hit a home run and drove in a pair while Jack Landquist, Luke DeWulf and Dan Mistic each had a double while Dudley and Thompson stole two bases each. Jack DeWulf started and earned the win, allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts over five innings. Thompson finished up, giving up a run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
PR-B scored twice in the first and three times in the second off Dudley for a 5-0 lead and scored six runs in the fifth for an 11-6 advantage before Nevis rallied for the sweep. The Tigers scored twice in the fourth, four times in the fifth, seven times in the sixth and twice in the seventh.
Luke DeWulf (3 for 4 with a double and a triple, three runs, three RBI), Jack DeWulf (2 for 5 with a triple and three RBI), Landquist (1 for 3 with a double and two RBI), Dudley (2 for 3 with two runs and three RBI), Thompson (2 for 4 with a double, three runs and an RBI) and Dillon McGee (1 for 3 with two runs scored) led Nevis' 13-hit attack. Thompson picked up the win in relief.
The sweep gave Nevis a 6-1 record in the conference and a 10-3 overall record. PR-B fell to 4-2 in the conference and 5-5 overall.
