Marti Fischer was greeted with a standing ovation Friday evening as she arrived at a spaghetti dinner and silent auction benefit in her name.

She had tears of joy and appreciation in response to the outpouring of support from the community.

Marti’s daughter, Ashley Eischens, estimates 600 people attended the benefit. The family was overjoyed with the number of people who came out to support their mother.

Marti was recently diagnosed with an incurable condition called Arachnoiditis, a rare and debilitating disease involving the nerves of the spinal cord. During testing to diagnose this condition, a brain tumor was also found, which is believed to be benign at this time, but will require monitoring in the coming months/years.

Throughout all of this, Marti has been receiving medical care from out-of-network providers leading to higher medical costs and she has been unable to return to work.

Friday night’s benefit, which included a silent auction with 300 items, will help with some of these medical expenses.

Friends and family wore brightly colored t-shirts with a daisy and “Marti’s bunch” printed on them as a way to show support for Marti and raise additional funds.

Marti is a nurse at Essentia Health – Park Rapids and has spent the last 33 years dedicating her life to helping others.

Family and friends hosted the benefit for the community to come out to bless Marti with the same love, support and care that she has given to so many others over the years.

A particularly touching moment happened Friday night when Sandy Green took the microphone to say a prayer. She asked those who attended to hold hands and come together as a community to pray.

Marti will be having surgery Dec. 22 and “we’re praying for positive results,” daughter Ashley said.

Monetary donations are accepted at Citizens National Bank of Park Rapids, c/o Marti Fischer Benefit, PO Box 231, Park Rapids, MN 56470.
