  Dana Husby and Sue Fisher played steady golf Saturday and Sunday to capture Club Championship titles at Headwaters Country Club.

     Husby won his fourth men’s title by carding a 179 over 45 holes while Fisher won her first women’s title by carding a 174 over 36 holes.

     Jim Emerson carded a 74 and Shelly Miller carded an 88 Sunday to win Senior Club titles.

Husby holds off Wilcox for men’s title

     Husby offset six bogeys with seven birdies to defeat Trent Wilcox by four shots to claim his fourth men’s title.

     Husby played consistent golf both days with 32 pars for a 1-under 179 to edge Wilcox, who finished second with a 183. Emerson took third with a 187 while Taylor Schroeder was fourth with a 188 in the 11-member field.

     The men’s Club champion in 2000, 2002 and 2004 opened Saturday’s first 18 holes with eight pars before a birdie on No. 9 led to a 35 on the front side. Birdies on No. 12, No. 14 and No. 18 sparked a 34 on the back side as Husby took the early lead by carding a 3-under 69.

     Emerson was in second place after Saturday’s round as birdies on No. 1, No. 3 and No. 7 led to a 36 on the front side and birdies on No. 12 and No. 17 led to a 35 on the back side for a 71.

     Wilcox used birdies on No. 4 and No. 8 and an eagle on No. 9 for a 36 on the front side before birdies on No. 13, No. 16 and No. 18 led to another even-par 36 and a first-day total of 72.

     Schroeder used birdies on No. 4, No. 9, No. 13, No. 15 and No. 18 for rounds of 36 and 37 to enter Sunday’s final round in fourth place at 73.

     Emerson cut the gap to one stroke after the first trip around the front nine Sunday as birdies on No. 3 and No. 8 led to a 35. Wilcox also gained a stroke as birdies on No. 4 and No. 9 led to a 35. Husby used a birdie on No. 9 to card a 36 while Schroeder fell seven shots back after carding a 39.

     On the back nine, a birdie on No. 16 helped Husby card a 38 for a 74 and a two-shot lead entering the final nine holes. Wilcox used a birdie on No. 15 for a 38 on the back side and a 73 while a birdie on No. 13 helped Emerson card a 39 on the back side for a 74.

     Four straight pars on the second trip around the front side gave Husby a three-shot lead over Wilcox and a five-shot cushion over Emerson.

     A par by Wilcox on No. 5 cut the gap to two strokes, but Husby sealed the win with a par on No. 8 and a birdie on No. 9.

     Also competing for the men’s club championship were Ron Litzau (193), Walt Leckner (194), Jack Schroeder (197), Lee Davis (202), Gary Marjama (207), Steve Paumen (215) and Charlie Schmidgall (227).

     Emerson won his first Senior men’s title with a 74 on Sunday while Jack Schroeder won the men’s First Flight with a net 66. Other flight winners were Karl Olson in the Second Flight with a net 72, Don Dearstyne in the Third Flight with a net 71, and Bob Hallett in the Third Flight with a net 63.

Fisher holds off Miller for women’s title

     Fisher took the early lead by carding an 84 during Saturday’s first 18 holes and followed with a 90 during Sunday’s final 18 holes for a 174 to win her first women’s title by three shots.

     Defending champion Shelly Miller finished second at 177 while Sharon Paumen was third with a 182. Janakaye Husby carded a 196 and Luann Hanson carded a 211 to round out the five-player field.

     During Saturday’s opening round, Fisher used three straight pars on No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 and another par on No. 9 to open with a 42. Paumen used pars on No. 3, No. 5 and No. 8 for a 44 while back-to-back pars on No. 3 and No. 4 led Miller to a 45.

     On the back side, Fisher carded pars on No. 11, No. 13, No. 16 and No. 18 for another 42 and an opening-round 84. Miller used pars on No. 13 and No. 18 for a 44 and an opening-round 89 while Paumen opened the back side with pars on No. 11, No. 12 and No. 13 and a birdie on No. 15 to take a one-shot lead before setting for a 47 and a first-day round of 91.

     Pars on No. 2, No. 3, No. 7 and No. 9 helped Fisher card a 44 on the front side Sunday to maintain the lead. Miller opened the front side with a par on No. 1, a birdie on No. 2 and a birdie on No. 5 to earn a share of the lead before finishing with a 44 to fall five shots back. Paumen opened with a 47 to fall 10 shots off the pace.

     Fisher maintained the lead with pars on No. 11 and No. 12 en route to a 46 on the back side for a 90 and 174 total. Miller closed the gap with a par on No. 10 and a birdie on No. 12, but her 44 on the back side fell three shots short.

     Miller did capture her first Senior title by carding an 88 on Sunday. Miller also tied Barb Fischer for first place in the First Flight with a net 75.
