Fargo woman accused of embezzling $50,000 from condo association
FARGO - To support her gambling habit, a 42-year-old Fargo woman allegedly embezzled thousands of dollars from her south Fargo condo association.
Linda Jane Brendemuhl was charged Wednesday in Cass County District Court with misapplication of entrusted property.
The charge claims she used her position as a fiduciary for the Fireside Condo Association to embezzle more than $10,000 from Aug. 9, 2009, until Aug. 9 of this year.
Brendemuhl, the head of the condo association's committee, allegedly told police she embezzled about $45,000 to $50,000 to support her gambling habit. She said she didn't know the exact amount but felt bad and wanted to pay the money back, according to the police report by Detective Jason Skalicky.
Bank statements for the condo association showed that from February 2008 through June 2012, $53,323.29 was transferred to Brendemuhl in the form of cash or checks written on the association's account, the report states.
Police launched the investigation after officers were sent on a welfare check to Brendemuhl's residence in the 16-unit condominium at 2320 20th Ave. S. on June 26.
Evidence found in the apartment alluded to the alleged embezzlement, and other members of the association had been aware of it before police were called there, Lt. Joel Vettel said.
A phone message left for Brendemuhl at her current place of employment, Border States Electric, wasn't immediately returned.
An initial court appearance hadn't been set.
