Langdon, N.D., man charged with handcuffing his mother, threatening with hammer

A Langdon, N.D., man who handcuffed his mother and threatened to hit her with a hammer was arraigned Tuesday in Cavalier County District Court.

Justin Wayne Ridley, 26, is facing charges of felonious restraint and terrorizing, both Class C felonies.

According to a court affidavit, Ridley handcuffed his mother at her home in Langdon, "so she wouldn't go anywhere."

Then he told her to put her hand on the table and threatened to hit it with a hammer he was holding. He put a hole through the table with the hammer before she tried to leave, at which point he pulled her from a pickup.

She finally got away and drove to the Cavalier County Sheriff's Office, where they removed the handcuffs.

There has been a motion for Ridley to commit to a mental evaluation in the case.

Class C felonies are punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
