West Fargo Costco hiring 200 new employees

West Fargo - New details on the incoming Costco Wholesale are painting a promising picture for prospective employees and the city's newest neighborhood.

The big-box retailer plans to hire at least 200 people before the store's planned opening next October, a Costco representative told the City Commission this week.

"The really nice thing is the salaries they pay their employees," City Administrator Jim Brownlee said Friday. "They're all nice-paying jobs."

Wages start at $11.50 for parking lot attendants, and the average salary for a cashier who has been with the company for a few years is $49,000, Brownlee said.

In addition to starting with 200 new employees, the buy-in-bulk giant will likely add another 50 once the store gets more established, Costco representative Ted Johnson told the commission.

The store will occupy 500,000 square feet of West Fargo's newest development, The Preserve, southwest of Interstate 94 at the Veterans Boulevard interchange.

Developers are looking for another big-box store and a hotel with a convention center for the area, despite the fact that homes will just start being constructed next week, said Dan Bueide, a Fargo attorney representing The Preserve owners.

"We've had a number of inquiries on both," Bueide said. "No signed agreements yet, but we're entertaining all offers."

Developers hope to have finalized purchase agreements with both a bank and Ag Country Farm Credit Services in November.

West Fargo's Costco will be the first in the state. The nearest stores are in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Coon Rapids, Minn.

Costco has more than 60 million cardholders at its 592 warehouses in 40 states and eight countries.

West Fargo's store will have a stand-alone gas station and 755 parking spaces.

Construction is expected to start in May, with a tentative opening date set for next October.
