Hancock police chief dies after boat capsizes in Stevens County

Donald Heikkinen

MORRIS -- Hancock Police Chief Donald Heikkinen died in a weekend boating accident on Long Lake in Stevens County.

Divers recovered his body Monday afternoon. Heikkinen, 50, was reported missing Sunday evening.

According to the Stevens County Sheriff's Department, a 911 caller reported that a boat carrying six people had capsized, but only five people made it back to shore.

Sheriff Randy Willis told the Associated Press it's too early to know whether alcohol was a factor. He says the body was being sent to Ramsey County for an autopsy.

The Sheriff's Department said that the boat was registered to Brian Krupke of Hancock.

Stevens County officials suspended the search late Sunday night due to fog and resumed the search. They resumed the search Monday morning, but murky water made the search difficult.

Heikkinen was found at about 4 p.m.

Teams from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Douglas and Pope counties assisted in the search.

Long Lake is about located about three miles southwest of Cyrus and eight miles east of Morris in Stevens County.
