Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Snellman is celebrating its centennial anniversary Sunday.

The day will be filled with worship, singing and socializing.

The morning service begins at 10 a.m. followed by lunch at the church from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

A special worship service will be at 2 p.m. with Pastor Bruce Noennig as a guest speaker. He served as pastor at Gethsemane from 1980-85 and is now serving a church in Moorhead.

Gethsemane's current pastor, Eddie Hosch, said the church's history is unique.

"The church started with a few members meeting in someone's home," he said.

Hosch came to the church June 26, right after his ordination. He was already familiar with Gethsemane, though.

"I served here from June of '09 to '10 as the vicar, which is kind of like an internship," he said.

After his ordination, Hosch was called to return to the church and now lives in the parsonage with his wife and two children.

The church also has a deep Finnish heritage.

"There are many members who still have relatives in Finland and continue to share their traditional recipes," Hosch said.

A committee has been gathering recipes for a church cookbook and it features many Finnish dishes.

"I saw it this week and it looks pretty thick," Hosch said.

The cookbooks will be on sale at Sunday's gathering, along with coffee mugs.

Photos will be on display showing changes to the church over the years. The current church was built from 1974-76. The original building was moved three times. The parsonage was built in 1979.

The congregation has about 150 members that come from around the region.

"We've got some members from right around here but others are from Sebeka, Bad Medicine," he said. "We draw from all over."

Everyone is invited to Sunday's celebration.
