Waubun man gets prison for assault
A Waubun man has been sentenced to 18 months in the state prison at St. Cloud after pleading guilty to a felony charge of domestic assault by strangulation.
A second felony charge, of domestic assault, was dismissed for Henry Ray Soyring, 26, of 39718 400th Ave., Waubun.
According to court records, on Nov. 13, a woman in Elbow Lake village called police to report an assault.
The woman said her boyfriend, Soyring, had been drinking and became verbally abusive, then physically threatening and abusive.
At one point he choked her with his hands to the extent that she could not breathe. Her two young children were home at the time. He prevented the woman and children from leaving. She eventually got away and called police from a neighbor's house.
Soyring has three prior convictions for domestic assault, in 2005, 2008 and 2010.
On Monday, he was sentenced by Becker County District Judge Joe Evans to 18 months in prison, with credit for 86 days served in jail. Soyring must also pay $210 in fines and fees.
The sentence, an upward departure from state sentencing guidelines, was executed at the request of Soyring, and will be served concurrently with another file.
