Man escapes injury when pickup goes into Pelican River
The driver of a pickup that veered off the highway and into the Pelican River early Monday morning was able to escape out the pickup's rear window, the Becker County Sheriff's Office said.
Authorities were called at 5:18 a.m. about a vehicle in the water at Dunton Locks between Detroit Lake and Lake Sallie, southwest of the city.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Cody J. Riedel, 20, of Long Prairie, fell asleep while driving northbound on U.S. 59 then crossed over the highway to the southbound lane and ended up partially in the river.
Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon said the cattails and snow depth slowed the pickup.
Riedel crawled out through the 1990 Ford pickup's rear window and into the box, where he was standing when authorities arrived, Gordon said.
The driver wasn't injured, but he was cold as his legs were wet, Gordon said.
