Glik's expands in region

A 113-year-old family-owned fashion retailer has expanded in the region.

Glik's opened a store in the Moorhead Center Mall in August, and a store in the Buffalo Mall in Jamestown, N.D., in October.

The clothing store sells denim-based, casual, branded sportswear, said Jim Glik, a vice president who runs the business with his brother, Jeff, the company's president.

The two men are the fourth generation of Glik to run the store.

Glik's started in 1897 when Joseph Glik opened his own men's clothing store in St. Louis.

There are now 54 Glik's in nine states, including locations in Detroit Lakes and Alexandria, Minn., both opened in 2004, and Park Rapids, Minn., was added in 2007.

The Jamestown store is its first in North Dakota.

"From our base down south, it seems we keep gravitating north," Jim Glik said.

When Jeff and Jim Glik started working for the company 25 to 30 years ago, it was a "junior department store," Jim Glik said, meaning it carried a little bit of everything.

"In today's market, you need to be a bit more targeted and directed," he said. "We've narrowed our focus and offering to what we do best: young, fun casual sportswear with a real denim base to it."

Glik's carries brands such as Fox Racing, Hurley, Quiksilver, Billabong, Amethyst, Almost Famous and Miss Me. Jim Glik said the targeted customer age is 18 to 40 years old.

As Savanna Snyder, manager of the Moorhead Glik's, walks through the store, she points out different styles: surf brands, skate brands, metal militia, fast fashion and a "Jersey Shore" look. She said Glik's provides "fashion at a good price for small-town America."

Jim Glik said smaller malls, like in Moorhead and Jamestown, are suited for their business. "To be a little fish in a big pond has been difficult for us," he said.

Kristi Ulrich, manager of the Moorhead Center Mall, said the store gives a certain demographic of shoppers another option.

"It's a great tie-in, with Maurices being down the hall, it's a lot of similar customers," Ulrich said. "They've got a great selection of jeans and designer tops."

Nick Bakhtiari, who's been helping open the Jamestown store, said customers have been excited about the new store.

"A lot of people continually come back, and they're very excited with the product we have," he said. "It makes it so you don't have to drive to the bigger city to get the brands we carry."
