RDO buys Ryan Potato in East Grand Forks
Two Red River Valley potato companies came together this week with the announcement Tuesday by the R.D. Offutt Co. that it was buying East Grand Forks' Ryan Potato Co.
Chairman and Founder Ron Offutt, who was travelling and not available for comment, praised the national reputation of Ryan Potato, known for its fleet of delivery trucks, in a press release issued by the company.
Fargo-based R.D. Offutt was founded in 1964. It boasts it is the largest potato grower in the nation, selling both fresh potatoes and frozen, processed potatoes.
Ryan Potato started life in Minneapolis as D.E. Ryan & Co. in the late 1800s. It came to East Grand Forks in 1929 to enter the local potato business.
R.D. Offutt says it will maintain the location in East Grand Forks and offer Ryan Potato employees jobs with its organization.
No one at Ryan Potato would comment on Tuesday.
