Deputy's medical status topic of Fargo news conference this morning

A news conference is scheduled at 8:30 this morning at Fargo's MeritCare Hospital to update Christopher Dewey's condition.

Dewey, a Mahnomen County (Minn.) sheriff's deputy, was gunned down last Wednesday while investigating a call near the end of his overnight shift. He suffered gunshot wounds to his abdomen and head.

"Chris is now out of immediate danger and has done great so far, but he will undergo more surgery and there's still a long road ahead for he and his family because of the injury to his brain," Dr. Robert Sticca, a MeritCare surgeon, said in a news release.

No family members of Dewey or his wife, Emily, plan to speak at today's news conference.

Dewey remains in guarded condition.

Two men, Thomas Fairbanks and Daniel Vernier, face charges for a confrontation with Dewey.
