Two flee police, leave behind 98 grams meth

A man and a woman are accused of fleeing police at the Detroit Lakes Walmart and leaving their car at Long Lake Park with nearly a quarter-pound of methamphetamines inside.

James Matthew Longfield, 30, of Mahnomen and Mariah Jean Giard, 24, of Naytahwaush are both charged in Becker County District Court with felony first-degree controlled substance crime.

According to court records, on Sept. 21 police officers responded to complaint about a man and woman shoplifting at Walmart. Their vehicle was located at Long Lake Park. Nobody was around, but a person could be seen swimming out in Long Lake.

Back at the car, officers allegedly saw a hypodermic needle and burnt spoon lying in plain sight.

A search of the vehicle allegedly turned up 98.2 grams of meth, with packaging.

At about 1:30 a.m. that morning, police were called after Giard pounded on the door of a cabin at Lakecrest Resort on Long Lake.

She allegedly admitted that they had fled Walmart and the meth was hers.

On Sept. 24, District Judge Joe Evans set bond for Longfield at $50,000 or cash bail at $10,000.

For Giard, bond was set at $30,000 or cash bail at $5,000. Their next appearance is Oct. 5.
