One of the lynchpins of a new development in Laporte opened Thursday afternoon. A park at the Paul Bunyan Trailhead opened to pint-sized approval and screams of delight Thursday afternoon. The $70,000 project will include a shelter, with work starting on Monday.

Laporte’s population of 111 sprang into action raising more than $15,000 in a direct mail fundraiser. The area will eventually include picnic tables, grills and trash cans. The Minnesota DNR built a large parking area there last year, which started the ball rolling.

The county committed $12,500 in 2013, another $12,500 in 2014 and voted last year to make an additional $34,480 available over the next two years to build the shelter.
