Train cars derail in Cass' Sylvan Township


Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch reports that on Sunday May 11th 2014 at approximately 11:48 PM the Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a train derailment west of Pillager, MN near County Road #101 and the Bigwater Addition Estates. Deputies arrived and found that a westbound BNSF train had derailed affecting approximately 50 train cars carrying coal. There were no injuries reported and this incident did not involve any hazardous material or pose a threat to public safety.

The following intersections are currently closed while cleanup and realignment efforts are underway: Bigwater Drive SW at County Rd #101 (132nd St) and Bigwater Drive SW at Arrowhead Dr SW. Access to this area using 45th AVE SW and Lake Placid Blvd SW are still available.

Sheriff Burch requests that citizens stay out of the affected area while crews continue with cleanup efforts for the next several days. The investigation continues with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and BNSF officials.
