Hubbard County nearly set to issue same-sex marriage applications

Hubbard County is nearly ready to accept same-sex marriage applications, but they won’t be legal until Aug.1.

“I know some of the bigger counties are,” said Auditor Pam Heeren. “I’ve got an e-mail out to the county attorney’s office to make sure there isn’t a resolution or something we need to have the board approve first. We are ready to go” pending legal review and board approval.

Once the county attorney gives the green light, “We’re ready to go,” Heeren said.

The unions aren’t legal until Aug. 1.

“They have to wait five days anyway, so doing it tomorrow, on June 6, isn’t going to speed up the process,” Heeren said. “It’s just that their application will be done and they’ll be ready to go by Aug. 1.”

All marriage applications, to avoid discrimination, will no longer refer to a bride and groom, Heeren said.

“They will be ‘first applicant’ and ‘second applicant,’” she said.
