Heat to be accompanied by cold front, thunderstorms

Mark Anthony

Some very spotty showers moved across Minnesota on Thursday.  The majority of the rain moved across parts of northern Minnesota.  Temperatures were warm on Thursday with highs in the 80s for most of the region.  However, there was a big contrast between northern Minnesota and southern Minnesota.  Park Rapids hit 77 degrees for a high on Thursday, but Madison soared to 95 degrees.  That shattered the old record for that community of 89 degrees set in 1998.

For Thursday night, some lingering showers were possible across northeastern Minnesota as a weak upper-level low impacted that part of the state.  The rest of the area saw a quiet night with lows in the 50s and 60s.  The winds backdown after 7 pm as a wind advisory  came to an end.

Friday, it was very warm and humid once again with highs in the 80s and 90s.  Record high temperatures were possible for some locations. The winds were breezy out of the east at 20-30 mph.  The winds  gradually became westerly by the afternoon as a cold front pushed through the state.

Showers and thunderstorms will became likely for Friday night into Saturday.  Some spots had the chance of these cells producing large hail and strong winds along with brief heavy downpours.

Drier air will return by later in the day on Sunday.  There is a chance of some lingering rain mainly early in the day, but it looks like most of it will be across east central Minnesota.

A drier pattern will return for late Sunday, Monday, and most of Tuesday before rain chances push through again Tuesday night into Wednesday.  Temperatures will be more seasonal for next week with highs in the low to mid 70s likely during that period.

Have a great rest of the weekend.
