Community Christmas Dinner feeds 550 on a beautiful day

Early crowds lined up all the way around the Park Rapids American Legion's large dining hall and out the back door into the parking lot. They filled the room, used all table space and set up even more chairs around the tables. (Sarah Smith / Enterprise)1 / 2

On a day that seemed more spring-like than winter, hundreds turned out for the annual Community Christmas Dinner. Guests stood in long serving lines while volunteers kept scooping and serving food. Co-organizers Lynn Spilman and Denny Anderson said more than 200 meals were delivered to people who couldn't come to the Legion. A separate crew was packing meals to go in the kitchen. Volunteer Jim Canada said the crowds came early, right at 11 a.m. "Denny and I cannot thank the many volunteers enough for making the dinner such a success," Spilman said. "Without them it would not happen." One family even donated toys for the kids who came to dinner. The 40-degree temperatures no doubt contributed to the turnout.
