Work proceeding downtown

Downtown Park Rapids side streets were open to traffic during the busy Fourth of July weekend.

Work continues on Phase 3, with water and sewer installed on the southern portion of Main. Storm sewer installation has begun.

Street grading could begin as soon as next week as soon as installation is completed. After street grading, crews will work on curb and gutter, followed by sidewalk pouring and street paving.

Previously, the second layer of bituminous on Second, Third and Fourth streets and the alleys was going to be placed after Labor Day. However, the crew hired to lay bituminous is now light on work because of the state shutdown. The crew expressed interest in coming in earlier to complete the work.

Mondays and Tuesdays are generally less busy downtown and would be a better time to close the streets for paving, according to downtown business owners.

During the next week streetlights will be installed on the side streets. Trees will be planted this fall.

Remaining Phase 2 work includes cleanup and corrections. Cleaning and sealing testing is being done on some of the colored concrete to see if it will help with the fading that occurred over the winter.

Weekly meetings continue at 8 a.m. Thursdays at Bella Caffé.
