Legends and Logging Days 2010 will celebrate our area's history, culture, artisans and food this week, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 13 and 14 at Red Bridge Park on the Fish Hook River.

Skilled chainsaw artists will sculpt masterpieces before your eyes and fiercely competitive loggers will thrill the crowd. Loon calling contestants will compete for the best calls in their age category.

This has been Park Rapids' signature event for more than 30 years and was established to honor the rich heritage of logging in this neck of the woods.

The Legends & Logging Days brings World Champion and World Record-Breaking Lumberjacks and Lumberjills, competing in wood chopping and sawing contests. Points these skilled competitors earn here will count toward the Lumberjack Championships.

Master Chainsaw sculptors will create north woods masterpieces all day Friday and Saturday. Judges will do "quick carves" to demonstrate their skills while the master carvers work. Competition will be keen as the chips fly and a masterpiece emerges from a raw piece of wood. All finished carvings will be auctioned off to the highest bidders on Saturday.

Visitors will find the unique items at our Marketplace. Food vendors will serve a delicious variety of fare from buffalo burgers and Chicago hot dogs to fresh fruit and smoothies. A chili and hot wing cook-off invites entries and offers prizes. Loon calling contests and family activities will take place both days. ImagiNick will be on hand to amaze the audience with his magic show.

Buttons and raffle tickets are $5 and get you in to the event both days. This year the raffle includes a beautiful Northwoods quilt designed by Monika's, a Stihl Chainsaw donated by Park Ace Hardware and a stunning bench donated by Master Chainsaw Carver Ross Olsen.

The All Veterans Memorial Committee will sponsor the Running of the Loons, races on the Fish Hook River both days. Other activities will include the Park Rapids firefighters' water fights starting at 6 p.m. on the southern end of Main street.

The Northern Knights Car Club's Run to the Rapids will do a "Show and Shine" at the fairgrounds on Saturday from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.
