Fair offers thrills, chills, laughs, dust

The ever-popular demolition derby is back this year at the Shell Prairie Agricultural Association's 2010 Hubbard County Fair. The dirt will fly starting at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 11. (Anna Erickson / Enterprise)

The 115th annual Shell Prairie Agricultural Association's 2010 Hubbard County Fair will feature a bunch of dummies.

Ventriloquist and comedian James Wedgewood will highlight the fair's Friday night venue at 7 p.m. July 9. The fair runs from July 7-11 in Park Rapids.

Wedgewood has entertained thousands at similar events throughout the Midwest and is best known for the wacky characters he voices, and the outrageous audience participation that's fun for all ages.

Great grandstand shows, midway fun and 4-Hers' fine work draw visitors to the county fair at summer's midpoint.

Events kick off Wednesday with motocross in the grandstand with practice at 6 and races starting at 7 p.m.

The annual talent show will entertain at 7 p.m. Thursday in the grandstand. Croon your best tune, put on your dancing shoes or break out that high school band instrument and sign up. Winners in three age groups will advance to state fair competition. Admission is a free will offering.

Friday is Senior Day at the fair with lunch at noon and a program to follow. Hubbard County's Outstanding Senior Citizens will be honored.

Saturday fair-goers are invited to tractor pull events. Out-of-field competition starts at 2 p.m. and modified classes will take over at 7 p.m.

The ever-popular, ever-raucous demolition derby begins at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Hubbard County youth work diligently to prepare projects, exhibits and livestock for judging at the county fair. Each year, many 4-Hers go on to the state fair and earn ribbons for their excellent work.

Other highlights during the fair include vendor exhibits, adult craft and garden displays, activities and exhibits in the Environmental Education building and food - from bison burgers to cotton candy.

Gate admission and parking are free. The fairgrounds are located on Fair Avenue in Park Rapids.
