School districts release student enrollment figures
Area school districts reported modest growth or held steady in student enrollment. These are the totals as of Sept. 5, the first day of school. Enrollment often fluctuates slightly throughout the school year.
Park Rapids Area Schools
Total K-12 enrollment at Park Rapids Area Schools is 1,558 — up three from the 1,555 students in fall 2016-17. Century Elementary School is starting the 2017-18 school year with 609 students, a decrease of 15 from last year's 624. As of Sept. 5, there are 123 kindergartners, 125 first graders, 109 second graders, 137 third graders and 115 fourth graders. Century Middle School's student body (grades 5-8) totals 519, an increase of 38 students compared to last year (481). The classes are as follows: fifth grade (142), sixth grade (129), seventh grade (141) and eighth grade (107). Park Rapids Area High School greeted 430 students on the first day of school, with 103 freshman, 116 sophomores, 116 juniors and 95 seniors. Last year, there were 450 high school students enrolled.
Menahga School District
Menahga welcomed 12 additional students this fall compared to last year. The total student body is 1,015 as of opening day. Menahga Elementary School (K-4) began the 2017-18 school year with 410 students, a decrease of 7 compared to last year. The breakdown is as follows: kindergarten (81), first grade (73), second grade (87), third grade (81) and fourth grade (88). The middle school, fifth through eighth grade, greeted 354 students on Sept. 5. Last year, there were 341 middle schoolers. There are currently 88 fifth graders, 77 sixth graders, 89 seventh graders and 100 eighth graders. Menahga High School has 251 students this fall, with 75 freshmen, 63 sophomores, 63 juniors and 50 seniors. Last year, the high school housed 245 students total.
Nevis Public Schools
Total PreK through grade 12 enrollment at Nevis Public School on the first day this year was 643 students, a slight increase from last year. There are 319 students in grades K-6, 281 in grades 7-12 and 41 students enrolled in the PreK program. The breakdown is as follows: Kindergarten (43); first grade (45); second grade (46); third grade (39); fourth grade (49); fifth grade (53); sixth grade (44); seventh grade (45); eighth grade (51); ninth grade (45); sophomores (50); juniors (48); seniors (42).
