BEMIDJI -- A Code Red Alert was issued Friday morning and the Bemidji Police Department is asking for help from the public in locating 25-year-old Keanu Joseph Major, who has escaped from custody.
Major escaped from custody after he was transferred to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center, following a fight between two inmates Thursday night.
Bemidji police were told Major had escaped from the custody of a corrections officer at about 3:36 a.m. Friday. Law enforcement searched the area near Sanford but could not find Major.
Police believe Major then stole a tan 2004 Chevrolet Silverado with the Minnesota license plate 668KKY from North Country Insulation in Bardwell Park.
Major was seen at about 11 a.m. getting out of a vehicle in the Lake George area, near U.S. Highway 71 and Mehlan Road.
He was earlier seen in the northwest part of Bemidji in leg shackles and a waist belt with restraints and an orange jumpsuit, according to a release posted to the Bemidji Police Department’s Facebook page.
Major is described as a Native American male, 5'10, 195 pounds with black hair and facial hair and hazel eyes. Major has a tattoo on his neck that says "Victoria."
Police say Major is considered dangerous and advised the public not to attempt to make contact with the male, but call 911 immediately if you have seen him or know his location.
Major was initially arrested on June 29 after he allegedly ran over another man with his car in response to being stabbed. He was charged with second-degree assault and with failing to stop after a traffic collision.
He is scheduled to appear in court Monday, Aug. 7.
A Code Red Alert was sent out at approximately 5 a.m. Friday.
Anyone with information on Major’s whereabouts should call the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office at 218-732-3111 or 911.
