A prize-winning buck was taken Saturday morning, not by firearm but by minivan.

A female driver hit the buck near Summerfield Farm, on Highway 71 near the intersection of Hubbard County Road 40 around 10:30 a.m.

The woman suffered minor injuries but refused transport to the hospital.

Some hunters hauling a trailer came by, slapped a tag on the deceased buck and hauled if off in the trailer.

The woman’s van had to be towed. The crash backed up traffic on Highway 71. Volunteers jumped out of their vehicles to herd drivers around the wreckage until a tow truck could haul the minivan away from the scene.

Deer on the roadways has been a chronic problem so some residents were happy that firearms season started Saturday.
