Parent/teacher conferences in all Park Rapids Area Schools (kindergarten through 12th Grade) will be held on Wednesday, Oct 8 from 1:30 - 7:30 p.m. Students will be released from school early.

Jeffrey Smith, author of “Mesabi Pioneers,” will have a book signing from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Book World in Park Rapids. He will be accompanied by the book’s publisher, Cheryl Gordon.


Friends of the Park Rapids Library will hold a Fall Book Sale on Thursday, Oct. 9 from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the library basement. Shoppers will find plenty of bargains on books, magazines, puzzles, DVDs and CDs for all ages to entertain during the long, winter months ahead. Featured at this sale are all VHS video tapes, cassette tapes and all books for children and young adults for 10 cents. The library basement is accessible to all.


The Park Rapids American Legion Auxiliary hosts a stuffed chicken breast dinner at the Legion from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10. Proceeds will benefit auxiliary projects.

The Family Safety Network of Cass County is hosting a Fish Fry Friday fundraiser from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 at the Union Congregational UCC Church in Hackensack.

The Park Rapids Friendly Squares hosts a square dance at the Century School on Friday, Oct. 10 from 7:30-10 p.m. All square dancers and spectators are welcome. The club provides a potluck lunch after the dance. For more information, contact Joy Benjamin at 564-6098.

Saturday, Oct. 11

R.D. Offutt Company will have a Potato Harvest Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at Park Rapids Area High School. Get a free 10 pound bag of potatoes and a bratwurst and French fry meal, with 100 percent of the funds collected will benefit the boys and girls basketball programs.

First English Lutheran Church of Dorset will hold its annual Harvest Dinner from 4:30-7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11. Freewill offerings are welcome. For more information, call 732-9466.

Sunday, Oct. 12

A benefit dinner and silent auction for Ray and Betty Vaadeland will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Park Rapids. The Vaadelands lost their home and all of its contents to fire. It is a freewill offering, with matching funds provided by Thrivent Financial Hubbard Cass Chapter. Items for the silent auction can be dropped off at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Park Rapids, or by calling Trudy Maninga at 573-3825 to make arrangements.

Monday, Oct. 13

Parent/teacher evening conferences for kindergarten through 8th Grade in Park Rapids Area Schools will be held on Monday, Oct 13 from 3:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 14

Headwaters Center for Lifelong Learning presents Duane Grage, a consultant and retired Methodist pastor, lecturing on “Is There Anything New While Growing Old?” from 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 at the Northwoods Bank community room. Grage will examine strategies and viewpoints related to aging.

The program is free of charge, open to the public for up to 90, and handicapped-accessible. Refreshments are provided. It is suggested to arrive early and park in the lot behind the liquor store if needed. Spaces in front of the bank are reserved for bank patrons.

Thursday, Oct. 16

Wendelin Van Draanen and Mark Huntley Parsons present a program “For Readers & Writers of All Ages” after hours at Beagle Books in Park Rapids Thursday, Oct. 16. The couple will discuss books, writing, the book-to-movie experience and how they manage to juggle day jobs, children and sharing an office without bloodshed.

Sunday, Oct. 19

A benefit dinner for Jim and Nadine Wheeler will be held Sunday, Oct. 19 from 4:30-7 p.m. at the Hubbard United Methodist Church in Hubbard. A chili and corn bread dinner, homemade pie and special item auction provides an opportunity for friends and associates to honor and thank the Wheelers. The event is open to the public.

The couple has been dealing with medical issues. Both had surgery in August; Jim for heart issues and Nadine for pancreatic cancer. For more information, contact the Hubbard church at 732-0224.

Saturday, Oct. 25

Jody Schwen, author of “Northern Comfort,” will discuss and sign her collection of humorous accounts of living Up North at noon Saturday, Oct. 25 at Beagle Books in Park Rapids.

Friday, Oct. 31

Join the Early Childhood staff and children at the Halloween Parade through the Heritage Nursing Home from 9:30-10:15 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 31. Show off costumes while entertaining those who live and work at Heritage. Stay until the end for surprises! There is no charge to join the parade, but you must register by calling 237-6600.

Long Lake Theater presents a Halloween-themed “Voice of the Prairie ”live radio variety show on Friday, Oct. 31. The program features old-time radio plays, comedy bits, ads, jingles and music. There will be a contest and pageant for the best-dressed couple. Tickets are $12 per person and available at Beagle Books, 732-0099 or

Thursday, Nov. 13

The Northwest Minnesota Foundation and Peacemaker Resources will offer “Mindful Matters,” a course for educators, social workers and anyone who provides services for children and youth from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13 at Bemidji’s Hampton Inn & Suites.

The deadline to register is November 3. There is no program fee. Visit The workshop is limited to 80 participants.

The workshop will cover mindful activities for children and teens and focus on the foundations of positive psychology, mindful education, neuropsychology and social-emotional learning.

Dr. Charlene Myklebust, co-author of “Mind Up” curriculum and an educational consultant, will lead the session. Certificates of attendance social work CEUs will be available.
