The Akeley Laundromat has re-opened to crowds of lake residents.

The Laundromat, on Highway 34, was first purchased in 1991 by Marcie Wosika and her husband.

The pair operated the Laundromat and a Hardware Hank business on the other side of the building.

Eventually their son took over the Laundromat business, but he struggled and it reverted back to Marcie.

She sold it in a contract for deed to another buyer, who couldn’t make it run, either, so Marcie got the business back a second time.

The Minnesota Folklore Theater operated out of it a couple seasons, but also ran into money problems.

After two years of being vacant, Marcie, now widowed, decided to reopen it. She and her son have been painting it and repairing the interior, restoring some of the neutral colors to the building instead of the dark palates the theater people favored.

She re-opened July 1. She said there are still some glitches with the coin machine, which is being replaced.

The Laundromat will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.

The old Hardware Hank store is being renovated to living quarters and Marcie hopes to sell it.
