Thursday, Aug. 14

The noon concert series will be at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids, beginning at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14. Thursday’s program will feature a variety of music, mostly from modern composers, in a variety of styles. Performers will be Roz Pederson, piano; Dick Max, string bass; Jennie Anderson, flute; Sarah Schultz, piano; and Deane Johnson, woodwinds. Deane will open with Ballade for bass clarinet, and also play clarinet music by Nino Rota, Fellini’s favorite film score composer, and a dance from the ballet, Romeo and Juliet. Dick will play “Berceuse (a lullaby) for a Baby Hippopotamus” for bass and piano. Sarah will join Roz on the piano for one of Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances, and Jennie and Deane will choose two of the Children’s Games by Bizet for flute, clarinet, and piano. The entire group will join together for a samba, “Come to the Mardi Gras.”

The audience is invited to bring lunch. Bars and coffee will be served.

The Hubbard United Methodist Church will host its annual Pig Roast on Thursday, Aug. 14, from 4 to 7 p.m., featuring roast pork, corn-on-the-cob, potato and broccoli salads and homemade pies.

There will be a business meeting of the Crazy Quilters Guild on Thursday, Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Park Rapids Library meeting room. Bring your show and tell to share.

The Retired Military Group will be meeting at the Logging Camp, Park Rapids, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14. Call Commander Erland Alto if you have any questions at 652-0114. All retired military and their family members are welcome.

The next meeting of the Becker County Republicans will be held on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes City Hall.

Friday, Aug. 15

St. Johns Lutheran Church in Akeley is having a free movie night at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15. The movie being shown is “Heaven is for Real.” Free popcorn, pop and water are available.

The Mantrap Valley Conservation Club is having a chicken fried steak dinner from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15 at the clubhouse located 1.5 miles east of Emmaville on County Road 24. The meal includes chicken fried steak with country style gravy and mashed potatoes, vegetable and homemade pies.

A freewill donation will be accepted. The donation will be used towards sponsored projects and renovations.

The annual Wolf Lake Harvest Festival returns Friday through Sunday, Aug. 15-17. This year’s theme is “So God Made a Farmer.”

The 2014 event kicks off with a Miss, Junior Miss and Little Miss Pageant at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15 at the Lions Hall.

Saturday’s events start at 8 a.m. with an Antique Tractor Show at Ray’s Repair. The Menahga Cross Country 5k and 10k starts at 9 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church. Kids games and face painting are at 10 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church. The Green Valley 4-H Club is hosting. A Lions ham and turkey dinner is from noon-1:30 p.m. at Lions Hall with freewill donation. The coloring contest deadline is at noon. Pick up and return to Lakes Area Co-op.

Harvest Fest Parade starts at 2 p.m. and the Mud Run starts 30 minutes after the parade. Call Kenny Phillips at 218-639-6354 to enter. The Pie Baking contest deadline is at 3 p.m. at Lions Hall. Two pies may be entered per person. The pie social follows the contest at 3:30 p.m. at the Lions Hall. A street dance is at 8:30 p.m. at the liquor store parking lot.

Sunday, Aug. 17 events include a horseshoe tournament at 8:30 a.m. Contact Don Toppari at 218-538-6518 to register.

The raffle ticket prize drawing is at 3 p.m. Tickets are $1 and people do not need to be present to win. First prize is $500, second prize is $250 and third prize is $100. Fourth and fifth prizes are $50 each and sixth and seventh prizes are $25 each. Tickets are available in Wolf Lake, Menahga and Osage.

Multiple food vendors, including the Ladies Auxiliary lunch wagon will serve food all three days.

The Susi Jarvi Charm Hunt is back this year.

The prize is $100 and sponsored by the Wolf Lake Wolf Pack baseball team. Contact Amanda Aho at 218-538-6690 when the charm is found. (If you or an immediate family member has found the charm in the past three years, you are ineligible to win the $100 prize).
