Wednesday, June 4

The Sons of Norway will meet today, June 4 at Calvary Lutheran Church. The board meeting is at 6 p.m. with a business meeting and program at 7 p.m. Dr. William J. Craft, President of Concordia College, Moorhead, will talk about the history of Concordia and how our Scandinavian ancestors founded a school in our “backyard.”

The public is invited and welcome to attend. Servers: Tony and Dorothy Platz, Lloyd and Carol Schrum, Rod and Joyce Stave. (Members: Please note the change in day/date and location for this meeting.)

The RMG (Retired Military Group) will meet at the Akeley Brauhaus at 6 p.m. today, June 4. This is earlier than the regular monthly meeting. Call Commander Erland Alto with questions at 652-0114. All retired military and family members and guests are welcome.

Thursday, June 5

The Northern Light Opera Company invites you to a delightful evening as we launch the summer opera season from 7-10 p.m. Thursday, June 5 at Blueberry Pines Golf Club, 39161 U.S. Highway 71, Menahga.

The entertainment will feature many songs from “Guys and Dolls,” NLOC’s July/August show, plus all-time favorites. Hearty hors d’oevres, cash bar, $15 per person payable at the door. Limited tickets are available to purchase at Beagle Books, Park Rapids, or reserve with “will call” by calling 237-0400.

The documentary DVD “Isaiah 9:10 Judgment” will be shown from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, June 5 and Monday, June 9 at the Park Rapids Area Library. It is presented by Share Ministry, Terry and Sandy Nelson. It is based on the book “The Harbinger” by Jonathan Cahn. For more information call 652-3394.

Friday, June 6

The Heartland Concert Association is sponsoring a bonus concert to all season membership ticket holders and new membership holders at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 6 at Faithbridge Church in Park Rapids.

Ticketholders are asked to bring their tickets for admission. New memberships may also be purchased that evening.

The concert will feature Emma Taggart along with her younger brother Jacob.

Emma is a 10-year-old classically trained pianist who is on her way to becoming a world renowned concert pianist.

By the age of 10, she has already won several competitions, both local and international, given many solo concerts throughout the United States and Europe, given a lecture demonstration on a suite by William Gillock and made her orchestral debut. In the summer of 2012, Emma received first place with a unanimous decision by the jury in the Maria Herrero International Piano Competition in Granada, Spain. Following this, in the spring of 2013, she made her orchestral debut with the Minnetonka Orchestra, playing Mozart’s Concerto No. 23 in A Major.

Emma will be joined by her brother, Jacob, who also aspires to be a great musician.

This year’s summer reading program, a collaboration between Triple M Assistance Dogs and the Park Rapids Area Library will kick off at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 6 at the library.

The presenter will be Cindy Morgan, from Triple M Assistance Dogs. She will bring some of her dogs that assist with reading. If some of the newest puppies are ready she may bring them too.

Assistance dogs also help people who have disabilities and diabetes. During the program, Morgan will talk about their training, skills and how to help someone become a better reader or live more independently with the assistance of a dog.

This is an informational program for anyone who wants to see and learn about assistance dogs as well as people who are interested in becoming volunteers with Triple M Assistance Dogs.

The June 6 program will be a lead in to the Kids Read Books with Dogs program that debuted last summer at the library and will be offered again this summer. The program will be offered alternate Thursdays and Fridays from June through August.

It is open to kids going into first grade through high school. The goal is to help kids read better and faster.

Registration and a signed permission slip (which will be available at the library) are required. There will be a sign up sheet at the library and people can come to the library or call (732-4966) to sign up.

The dates are Friday, June 13, Thursday, June 19, Friday, June 27, Thursday July 3, Friday, July 11, Thursday, July 17, Friday, July 25, Thursday, July 31, Friday, Aug. 8, Thursday, Aug. 14, and Friday, Aug. 22.

Each participant will sign up for an available time slot between 10:30 a.m. and noon.

Saturday, June 7

A Walk for Life for the Pregnancy Resource Center will be Saturday, June 7.

Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 11 a.m. at the Pregnancy Resource Center in Park Rapids. It is about a two mile walk.

A picnic will be at noon after the walk.

Prizes will be awarded to the top pledge raisers. Call 732-5212 for more information.

The regular meeting of the Mantrap Valley Conservation Club Auxiliary will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 9 at the clubhouse.

A support group meeting for Celiac Disease is at 6 p.m. Monday, June 9 at the Wadena Alliance Church, 1428 S. Jefferson St. in Wadena.

The monthly, free informational meeting is being held to help people with Celiac disease learn more about the disease: what to eat, how to cook and bake using gluten-free flours and ingredients. Informational materials will be available along with some gluten-free recipes.

Each month there is a potluck supper. Along with a gluten-free dish to share, please bring about eight copies of the recipe to share with the group.
