The All Veterans Memorial committee continues to make progress on an interpretive center with hopes of educating the public.

Work has been progressing slowly on the Memorial Interpretive and Educational Center located on Highway 71 south, next to the Park Rapids Lakes Area Chamber.

More donations are needed to complete the project, which will eventually hold information on U.S. wars along with stories from men and women who’ve served in the military, such as 2nd Lieutenant Aloya F. Liepold.

Ron Paulbicke, vice president of the All Veterans Memorial committee, said Liepold was from Park Rapids and was a B-25 bomber who died in the South Pacific serving his country Jan. 20, 1943.

His belongings eventually ended up with Harold Condiff and a tribute was created to honor the pilot. Someone donated money to have the matting and framing done at Cattail Creek. Among the belongings was a journal where Liepold wrote about his experiences at war.

The memorial will be displayed at the Memorial Interpretive and Educational Center.

“This is what I like about our organization,” Paulbicke said. “The history is so interesting and helping others to learn.”

The committee has recorded interviews of soldiers that they are working to get converted to DVD. These will eventually be included in the interpretive center as well.

“We need about $10,000 to finish the inside and we’re making our way there,” he said.

Donations continue to come in for the Park Rapids memorial but more are needed to complete the interpretive center. The committee could also use more members.
