‘Henrietta Mall’ no longer open

By Sarah Smith

The "Henrietta Mall" at the south side transfer station is closed for browsing.

Scavengers and scrap metal purveyors kindly go away.

But there’s a catch.

If you need something, check in with staff, said interim solid waste manager Jed Nordin. Let them know what you need and if an attendant has time, he or she can take you right to the spot, without you having to search through mounds of discarded stuff and dirt.

But the days of garbage seekers going in and willy-nilly looking for bargains is over, Nordin said.

“A lot of stuff is obviously for resale,” he said. But vendors have contracted with the transfer stations to sell those goods for profit.

For years the center tried working with scavengers, only to see trucks full of scrap metal go out the door. That's how the facility got its moniker.

“We want people to re-use stuff,” Nordin said. But the wholesale looting of the place has come to an end.
