St. Joseph’s honored as ‘Top Performer’

St. Joseph’s Area Health Services has been named a “Top Performer on Key Quality Measures” by The Joint Commission, the nation’s leading accreditor of healthcare organizations.

The Joint Commission honors St. Joseph’s as a “Top Performer” for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes shown to improve patient care. St. Joseph’s is one of 1,099 hospitals across the U.S. earning the “Top Performer” distinction for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance.

The recognition St. Joseph’s receives is specific to collaborative work on Surgical Care Improvement (SCIP) measures. The Joint Commission sites 12 SCIP quality expectations which St. Joseph’s measured and reported in 2012.

Becky Bentley, St. Joseph’s Perioperative Services manager, led the SCIP core measures initiative involving several departments.

“This award is a collaborative effort from all staff to ensure the safety of our patients and positive surgical outcomes,” Bentley said. “The dedication of surgeons, anesthetists and nursing staff is truly a gift to our community. We are very blessed to work in an environment that promotes excellence and patient safety.”

To be name a “Top Performer on Key Quality Measures” a hospital must:

  • Achieve cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures.
  • Achieve performance of 95 percent or above on every reported accountability measure where there are at least 30 denominator cases.
  • Have at least one core measure set that has a composite rate of 95 percent or above, and within that measure set all applicable individual accountability measures have a performance rate of 95 percent or above.

A 95 percent score means a hospital provided an evidence-based practice 95 times out of 100 opportunities.

“We are so pleased to receive this recognition and could only accomplish these outcomes through the efforts of our staff and physicians working together,” said Chris Broeker, St. Joseph’s Director of Quality.
