New Park Rapids superintendent to board, district: 'Give me focus' to develop vision for building, learning

Park Rapids Schools superintendent Lance Bagstad is requesting district goals be defined, board members asked to meet in a work session with him to determine objectives, from which a vision for the school district will be developed.

Bagstad made the request "to give me focus" regarding student and building issue priorities.

Board members agreed the time has come for such an exercise, setting a workshop for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26.

In other action, the board:

n Welcomed new teachers Shari Emerson, who will teach middle school art, third grade teacher Rebecca Buhr and Cory Leppanen, who is the middle and high school band director.

"We are thrilled to have them with us," Century principal Joleen DeLaHunt told board members.

n Approved adding a sixth section of kindergarten due to enrollment numbers of 125 students.

n Learned Century School has been designated a "Celebration School" via the state's new Multiple Measurement Ratings based on Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment test scores. Data from the tests determines student growth.

The state named 128 schools Reward Schools, recognized for being in the top 15 percent of all Title I schools.

Celebration schools is a new category for the next 10 percent of high achieving Title I schools after Reward schools. From the data, 211 schools were determined as Celebration eligible schools.

n Approved a boys hockey agreement between Park Rapids Area High School, Walker-Hackensack- Akeley School, Park Rapids Hockey Association and Walker Hockey Association.

n Approved a girls varsity hockey agreement between Park Rapids Area High School and Park Rapids Hockey Association.

n Approved Barb Thomason as junior varsity girls tennis coach.

n Approved new hire Lisa Henry as a paraprofessional.

n Approved the resignation of Alicia Hillesland as junior high boys and girls track coach.

n Approved hiring an additional 8th grade football coach due to the number of participants, bringing the roster of coaches to four.

n Agreed to partner with the city and Park Rapids Tennis Association to plant trees at Depot Courts. This is at no cost to the district.

n Expressed gratitude to Riverside United Methodist for hosting an opening workshop breakfast.
