Park Rapids artists excel at art festival

Several Park Rapids students placed in the Section 8A Visual Arts Festival Wednesday, March 21 at Sacred Heart High School in East Grand Forks.

Becky Schaefer received the "Spotlight on the Arts Award" award for her oil painting titled "Good Old Days." Her "Best of Show" painting will represent Park Rapids at the Minnesota State Visual Arts Exhibition in May.

The Visual Arts Festival has been a part of the Minnesota High School Activities since 2002. Artwork from the 21 participating schools included pieces from more than 240 students in the nine categories including drawing, painting, sculpture, media arts, crafts, print making, ceramics, 2D mixed media/collage and graphic design.

Tyler Booge, Jessica Cordahl, Cassidy Haggard and Allisa Berhiaume received superior ratings in drawing; Brandy Parsons, Beckey Schaefer and Alli Belfiori received superior ratings in painting; Emily Grimes and Christina Mackley received excellent ratings in painting; Alli Belfiori and Brandy Parsons received superior ratings in sculpture; Brandy Parsons and Alissa Berthiaume received superior ratings in media arts; Alli Belfiori received an excellent rating in printmaking; Ian Johnson received a superior rating in ceramics; and Allycia Zinke received a superior rating in graphic design.

Students also had the opportunity to participate in workshops during the festival presented by Gary Stegman, Crookston High School; Jodi Peterson, Norman County West High School and Climax-Shelley High School; and Kory Greiner, Blackduck High School.

The Visual Arts Festival is a juried art show. Awards for excellent and superior are awarded on a point system. One artwork in each category receives the Best in Show classification and advances to 2012 Minnesota State Visual Arts High School Exhibition May 10-19 hosted by The College of Visual Arts in the CVA Gallery at 173 Western Avenue North in St. Paul.
