SADD students launching safe driving campaign

Students in Park Rapids, Nevis and Laporte are working to make the roads a safer place this holiday season.

The Park Rapids Area High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) group, working with the Minnesota chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, will launch the "Tie One on for Safety" campaign Friday, Nov. 25 during the annual tree lighting ceremony in downtown Park Rapids.

The "Tie One on for Safety" campaign is an annual awareness event from Nov. 25 through Jan. 2. Road travel and traffic fatalities traditionally increase between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve holidays.

This awareness campaign is sponsored each holiday season by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to encourage everyone to "Drive Safe, Sober and Buckled Up." It also aims to raise awareness about the dangers and consequences of drunk driving and also promotes the importance of consistently wearing a seatbelt.

The goal is to hand out 3,000 ribbons across Hubbard County, said Bill Dent, Hubbard County Youth Alcohol Prevention Coordinator.

Park Rapids will team up with Nevis and Laporte groups to remind Hubbard County residents the importance of safe holiday travel. This will be the first coordinated activity with the new Hubbard County Alcohol Prevention Coalition.
