Smith receives St. Olaf alumni award
Alison Smith, daughter of John and Linda Smith of Nevis, has received the Graduate of the Last Decade Award from St. Olaf College.
Smith, who is a medical student at Mercer University School of Medicine in Savannah, Ga., has a master's degree in public health.
She spent time traveling to Ecuador and Tanzania conducting field research and went on to work for the Global AIDS Program at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
Working in more than 15 countries, she obtained estimates of the number of people affected by HIV globally, conducted epidemiological training and worked with African refugees.
At 27, Smith decided to pursue a medical degree, enrolling two years later. Now entering her second year, Smith is considering specializing in emergency care, pediatrics or obstetrics.
Smith has earned multiple honors for community service work including the Ann Bancroft Award, the U.S. Gold Congressional Award and the Outstanding Young American Award from the Boy Scouts of America.
