Five new teachers will join Park Rapids grade school faculty in the fall

The Park Rapids School Board approved several "new hires" this week.

The teachers include Jeannie Mayer, second grade; Chelsea Pederson, third grade; Allison Spahn, third grade; Zach Holsman, elementary physical education teacher and Alicia Hillesland, a Title reading teacher.

Superintendent Glenn Chiodo said this concludes hiring for the 2011-12 year, pending kindergarten numbers.

If kindergarten enrollment warrants, another teacher will be added to the staff.

In other action, the board:

n Learned the high school food shelf challenge raised $700 and more than 300 pounds of food for the Hubbard County Food Shelf. Mike Baumgartner's AP math class of nine kids were the challenge winners, earning rolls, juice and fruit as their reward.

The students hosted a blood drive in April with 45 donating, 42 first-time donators.

n Reported school district enrollment remains stable, with 1,548 in April, compared with 1,544 in October 2010.

n Approved an updated school calendar, after learning the district cannot have school Jan. 2.

School will resume Tuesday, Sept. 6 next fall. All-day conferences will be held Oct. 19 with "teacher association days," no school, Oct. 20-21. No school will be held Nov. 11 and Nov. 24-25, Thanksgiving. Winter break will run from Dec. 23-Jan.2. School resumes Jan. 3.
