Park Rapids School Board approves budget adjustments of $510,000; district won't replace five staffers

The Park Rapids School Board approved $510,000 in budget adjustments Monday.

The budget adjustments included not replacing five retiring employees for a savings of $371,000.

Also, the current assistant principal at Century, Jeff Johnson, will become the high school principal. Principal Al Judson is retiring at year's end.

Johnson's position will be eliminated and Shelli Walsh will take over his testing duties.

Assistant principal John Schumacher will now split his time between the high school and middle school. He will continue as activities director.

Four paraprofessional positions at Century School will be eliminated at a cost savings of $79,000.

The district is anticipating four sections in kindergarten, first, second and third grades and five sections in fourth grade. Kindergarten could be a five-section class, like this year, depending on enrollment.

Four sections are expected in each of the middle school grades.

A 3/7 time Spanish teacher position from Nevis will be eliminated, saving $18,000. A bus monitor position will be eliminated for a $15,000 savings.

Superintendent Glenn Chiodo will take over some curriculum duties and evaluation of non-tenured staff members.

The middle school activity fee will be will be raised from $50 to $60 and senior citizens, 62 and up, will pay $4 for school events, raising an estimated $7,000.
