The Century School wind turbine is spinning once again, thanks to a grant from Enbridge.

Park Rapids Area Schools Superintendent Lance Bagstad reported that the wind turbine was fixed in early August. The district was the recipient of a $5,000 Enbridge community grant.

The wind turbine was damaged by lightning when a tornado moved through Park Rapids in the summer of 2011. Damage at the time was estimated at just over $7,000 with a $5,000 insurance deductible to be met.

The goal is to utilize the turbine for educational purposes once again. Previously, the wind turbine was utilized in science classes and school projects.

The turbine doesn’t significantly reduce energy costs at the school but that wasn’t the ultimate goal. Rather, the educational aspect was the focus.

The wind turbine was installed in 2007. The idea came out of a 2006 Blandin Community Leadership program workshop.
