Park Rapids adds section of kindergarten

By Anna Erickson

Park Rapids Area School District will have seven sections of kindergarten this fall to keep class sizes low.

Park Rapids Superintendent Lance Bagstad presented the request to the Park Rapids Area School Board Monday night.

“Under the kindergarten initiative, we’re posting for an additional kindergarten section,” he said. “We’re working hard on trying to maintain small class sizes in our primary areas and early childhood.”

With the number of students already signed up for kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year, he said it was time to add a section.

“I’m pleased to report that since last week we have one more student’s paperwork in and we’re at 135 students. We know that there’s a lot of time between now and the beginning of the school year but things are looking very promising,” Bagstad said.

That will make class sizes just under 20 students per class.

The school board will meet once in July and will likely be approving the hiring of a new kindergarten teacher at that meeting.
