Park Rapids man sentenced for burglary

Alex James French, 19, of Park Rapids has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony second-degree burglary.

A gross misdemeanor charge of check forgery was dismissed in a plea agreement.

According to court records, on Jan. 28 he wrote three checks totaling $240 at Chief's Corner Store in rural Becker County. The checks had allegedly been stolen and forged.

The burglary charge stems from a June 23 incident in which he broke into a rural Becker County home and stole two TV sets and a PlayStation4. He had some of the stolen items in a backpack when the vehicle he was riding in was pulled over by law enforcement.

On Nov. 27, Becker County District Judge Gretchen Thilmony sentenced him to 18 months in prison at St. Cloud, stayed 10 years. He was ordered to serve 104 days in jail. He must pay a $1,000 fine, $1,165 in court fees, and $461 in restitution, and was placed on supervised probation for 10 years.
