Customer requests prompt opening of 2nd Time Around

A faltering economy, an under-utilized back room and customer requests has prompted Ann Johnson to open a consignment shop on Main.

"I've been a garage 'saler' my whole life," the owner of Stan's Hallmark Card and Gift Store said. "Today, more than ever, somebody's trash is somebody's treasure."

So she decided to clean out part of the back storage room and voila! a new mercantile establishment has emerged.

2nd Time Around is a new component to the Penney's catalogue site, as well as the gift and card store Mike and Ann Johnson purchased in 1982.

"Business was declining," she said, citing the recession and construction on Main. So she decided to move forward with a store featuring consigned miscellaneous household and home interior goods - with a business plan to boot.

Every 30 days, the price of an item is reduced by 25 percent. At 60 days, the price is cut in half.

Ann Johnson, who "understands the consignment store customer," does the consumer-friendly pricing.

The store holds an ever- changing inventory of puzzles - a hot seller, picture frames, kitchenware, books, stuffed animals, children's and adult clothes and miscellany.

The majority of sales, she said, are the household goods.

2nd Time Around is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Those interested in finding a new "home" for items are invited to give her a call.

"It was a business decision based on what the customers were asking," she said.
