My Favorite Closet -"recycling what people don't need" - has opened on Highway 34 just west of Dorset Corner.

"Our fan base is anyone who wears clothes," owner Noel Johnson joked of the enterprise.

Noel and Vickie Johnson bought the home a year ago, a second building on the site previously an antique store. The knotty pine interior - and a friend willing to share clothing racks - prompted the decision to open the store.

Last summer, both were working and living in Thief River Falls, the store open on weekends. But when the restaurant for which Noel was working sold, the Park Rapids native decided to "come home" and open the store on a full-time basis.

"So many people don't want to hold rummage sales," said Vickie, who continues to commute, selling electronic components to customers across the globe.

"Now on weekends, I sell clothing to people from all over the country," she said. And she also creates bags from sweaters.

My Favorite Closet is a venue for apparel - from beach to ballroom - for men, women, maternity, children and babies as well as scrubs for those in a medical-related field and shoes.

The clothes are sized and categorized, everything hanging up, with a dressing room available.

"It's an ever-changing inventory," Vickie said of the "name brand" clothing arriving at the store.

Donations of clothing and household items are welcome. "We pass on the cost of goods," Noel said of prices ranging from a quarter to $5.

"Our mission is catering to the needs of people in a down economy," Noel said. "Chronic shoppers love this store," he said of prices and organized inventory.

Mothers with kids appreciate the selection, Vickie said. "Twenty dollars buys a pile of clothes - with something for everyone."

My Favorite Closet also features a "summer read" section, with books sold at five for a dollar and toys.

Plans call for the store to remain open year 'round, with the addition of a boardwalk, garage and storage area on the agenda.

The store is open Tuesday through Saturday "with flexible hours," generally opening at 8 a.m.
