There will be quite a light show April 20 in Park Rapids.

The Park Rapids Fire Department will burn down two houses on Park Avenue South (Highway 71) and Seventh Street West to make room for a parking lot at the new dialysis center.

Firefighters will gather at the fire hall just down the street at 8 a.m.

One lane of Highway 71 will be blocked off to keep traffic away from the controlled burn. That lane closure will continue throughout the day until the homes are burned and demolished, said Fire Department Training Officer and Mayor Pat Mikesh.

Chief Donn Hoffman is urging nearby residents to close their windows, and remove anything they don’t want smelling of smoke or coming into contact with the particles from the burn, including laundry hanging out on a line.

The department is conducting a training session that day. Firefighters from Park Rapids, Menahga, Nevis, Carsonville and Wolf Lake have been invited to participate.

The houses have been fenced off for a couple weeks and are abandoned.
