Nevis School project to begin soon

Work on the Nevis School upgrades may begin in the next two weeks, but the project’s price tag is a bit heftier than anticipated.

Nevis board members learned the estimated construction total is $3,184,970. The district borrowed $2.445 million, having gained voter approval in November, and will receive a grant of $500,000 for the Early Childhood wing, totaling $2.945 million for the project.

Pete Filippi of Contegrity Group, the construction management firm hired for the project, recommended rejecting flooring bids and putting a mechanical electrical company’s control bid on hold, pending further discussion with contractors. The board agreed.

“The bidding is tight,” said Filippii. “We may look at alternative products.”

But superintendent Steve Rassier assured the board that money in capital outlay could be tapped “as a last resort,” as well as other possible sources.

After the meeting, he said he did not recommend trimming the project’s scope. “I want to complete it in its entirety.”

Construction will include an Early Childhood Family Education addition on the east end.

Portable classrooms on the west side of the high school will be replaced with three permanent classrooms and locker rooms will undergo remodeling. A new band and choir room will be added on the east side of the original gym.
